From its beginnings, I Trovatori has distinguished itself through a theatrical poetics that blends popular tradition with contemporary dramaturgy, with particular attention to the figure of the medieval jester, reinterpreted as a critical, ironic, and civic voice of contemporary society. Their stage language is direct and essential, characterized by a strong relationship with the audience and by the ability to address social, cultural, and political issues through irony, playfulness, and participation. In 2013, the company debuted with La luce del Potere (The Light of Power), a production that satirically explores the relationship between individuals and power and marks the creation of the jester character Sepillo da Ypsigro. In 2019, the company premiered Il prestigio di un popolo (The Prestige of a People), a satirical and jester-like exploration of the relationship between power and faith. The production features Sepillo da Ypsigro alongside the minstrel Netroio da Creta, portrayed by guitarist and music master Giuseppe Aiosi. This production marked the beginning of the artistic and theatrical project I Racconti di Sepillo da Ypsigro (The Tales of Sepillo da Ypsigro), a cycle of performances that reinterprets the forms of medieval jesting and popular theatre through a contemporary perspective, adapting them through agile, accessible languages deeply connected to the present. In 2020, La Pupara premiered, a new production belonging to the I Racconti di Sepillo da Ypsigro series, in which the two jesters address the theme of the fight against the Mafia. In 2021, the company created StraTeatro, a theatre festival bringing together young actors and professional theatre companies from across Italy. In August 2022, in collaboration with Teatro Libero di Palermo, I Trovatori produced Come ci piace (As We Like It), written by Giada Costa and Giuseppe Vignieri and directed by Giuseppe Vignieri. The comedy pays tribute to Shakespeare’s works and verses. In February 2023, the company was selected for the Milanese festival Le mille e una piazza (A Thousand and One Squares) with La Pupara, receiving a special mention “For social and civic commitment.” In 2024, I Trovatori created Riccardo III. Il potere a pezzi (Richard III: Power in Pieces), a production based on Shakespeare’s tragedy and reinterpreted through the language of the jester. The production concludes the trilogy devoted to the theme of power within the I Racconti di Sepillo da Ypsigro project. In the same year, the company also became one of the organizers of Castelbuono è una favola (Castelbuono is a Fairy Tale), a festival dedicated to theatre for young audiences. Riccardo III. Il potere a pezzi also represents a further significant step in the company’s artistic journey: the production became part of the I Teatri di Pietra circuit and was selected for the I Quartieri dell’Arte festival in Viterbo, directed and organized by Gian Maria Cervo. Participation in these important artistic networks and festivals confirms I Trovatori’s ability to engage with nationally significant contexts while maintaining a highly distinctive and original artistic identity. With their latest production, Gelone, at the request of Aurelio Gatti, I Trovatori further entered the I Teatri di Pietra circuit, strengthening their relationship with an organization dedicated to promoting historical and archaeological heritage through live performance. The inclusion of these productions in nationally significant artistic circuits and festivals represents further recognition of the company’s artistic journey and research, once again confirming the uniqueness of I Trovatori’s language and style, which brings together the tradition of popular and jester theatre with contemporary dramaturgy and the enhancement of cultural heritage sites. Alongside this line of research, I Trovatori also produce original dramaturgy and theatre for social engagement, addressing social and cultural themes through a theatrical language capable of combining immediacy, irony, and reflection. A significant part of their work is also dedicated to theatre for young audiences, with productions aimed at children and adolescents and designed to stimulate imagination, critical thinking, and awareness. The company also promotes workshops and educational programmes aimed at involving local communities, rediscovering stories and narratives rooted in the territory, and regenerating marginal spaces through art. The company’s work is based on the belief that theatre is not merely representation, but a living space for interaction, where critical thought, collective memory, and theatrical action intertwine to generate awareness and transformation.
