Matteo Levaggi (1977), began his classical dance studies at the Classical Ballet School directed by Liliana Cosi and Marinel Stefansescu. He later graduated from the Ballet School of the Theatre of Turin (classical ballet under the Vaganova methodology and contemporary dance, history of dance, history of music and sulpmy). He joined the Ballet of the Theatre of Turin as a member of the ensemble in 1995, directed by Loredana Furno, where prestigious names such as Karole Armitage and Luca Veggetti created main roles for him.
In 1993, he won the contemporary dance section of the International Competition of the City of Rieti. In 1996, he won third place at the Concours International de Paris – Théatre des Champs-Elysées.
In 1997, he joined the Aterballetto under the direction of Mauro Bigonzzetti. In the same year, he danced as a guest artist with a solo by Bigonzetti at the Festival of Ballet de l’Havana directed by Alicia Alonso as a representative of the Italian dance world. In 1998, actor Giorgio Albertazzi cast him as Antinoo for his version of The Memoirs of Adrian, a role that was played by Eric Vu An.
In 1999 he was appointed permanent choreographer of the Ballet Teatro di Torino, a role he held with strong public and critical acclaim, establishing important international collaborations. One of his first major works was “An evening with Maximiliano Guerra” (Etoile of the Teatro La Scala), and a large Spanish production centered on the figure of Achilles, performed by the great actress Angela Molina, Muse of Pedro Almodovar, as well as the dancer of Flamenco Raphael Amargo.

Many of Levaggi’s works use the original music of composers such as Giovanni Sollima, Carlo Boccadoro, Lamberto Curtoni, Andy of Bluvertigo, Bochum Welt, giving the choreographic system the opportunity to establish a deep bond between dance and music.
With the BTT he won the Award for Best Resident Choreographer – awarded by the jury of the famous dance magazine Ballet2000, performing at the Palais des Festival de Cannes.

The famous dancer Violette Verdy, guest and award-winner of the evening said in review to his choreography: “Mature artist, of incredible talent.”

In 2004, he debuted his work on the figure of Caravaggio at the International Festival of Nervi Ballets (Genoa/IT) with the original music of the famous Cellist Giovanni Sollima. This choreography will become part of the Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company repertoire in 2014.
In 2005, he created the ballet La Bottega Fantastica and Drowning by Numbers with music by Michael Nyman for the ballet of the Verona Arena, with which he will begin a fruitful collaboration.

In 2006, Ismael Ivo asked him to choreograph the creation “White Song…” at the Venice Biennale – Dance.
In 2007, he created a pas de deux for the dancers of Ballet de Genève, Celine Cassone and Bruno Roy, at the Gala de Les Etoiles de Paris (Théétre des Champs-Elysées), with music by Dmitri Shostakovich.
In the same year, he created a new work with music by Heiner Goebbels for the Zagreb Music Biennale.
In 2008, he was a guest choreographer at The Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, directed by Guy Darmet, with his work “First Touch I”. The following year he was invited to the Mecca of contemporary American dance at the The Joyce Theater, where he presented First Tap I and II. The Financial Times defined his work as “sublime delicacy.”

In 2010, the dance critic Francesca Pedroni dedicated the work of Levaggi, Primo Toccare I II III an important documentary for SkyTv Classica.

In 2014, he embarked on a career as a freelance choreographer.

In 2015, director Davide Ferrario brought the choreographic work SEXXX, distributed by NexoDigital, to the cinema in the form of a feature film. The film won, among others, the Electronic Choreographer Award.

He later created ballets for the Maggio Danza/Opera in Florence, for example the ballet “Action Point” with music by Oscar winner Ennio Morricone. At the same time Peter Martins wants him for the creation of “Sensorium” for the New York Choreographic Institute, a project associated with the New York City Ballet.

In 2017, he becomes the resident choreographer of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo where he resumes the collaboration with Michael Nyman and creates a contemporary version of “The Sleeping Beauty”. In the same year, he debuted at the Ravello Festival with Les Italiens de l’Opèra de Paris for which he created a pas de deux for the Etoile, Valentine Colasante and the First Dancer, Alessio Carbone.

In 2018, his new creation “Crises” debuts at the Transart Festival in Bolzano with the MDI ensemble.
In 2019, he debuted at the Madre Museum in Naples with the Performance “Death Speaks”, within the exhibition “Robert Mapplerthorpe – choreography for an exhibition”, with musical works by David Lang, working on an aesthetic that over the years has been well defined, in complete communication with the visual arts.

“He is definitely a very talented choreographer and thanks to his solid and lovable knowledge of classical ballet, the movements he creates for the dancers are really interesting and beautiful to see.”

Violette Verdy – New York Choreographic Institute 2014

“It’s a rare choreographer, which makes you feel that you’re not waiting for something to happen, because that something is already happening – every moment “a visible action of life,” as Merce Cunningham once said.”

Apollinaire Scherr, Financial Times – NYC
